Exploiting the Opponent’sVision Field Limitations

Defenders are often taught topoint one hand toward the ball and one hand toward the opponentand to gaze at a point roughly between the two. The defender isto back up until both the ball and the opponent are within thedefender’s field of vision. The defender’s limitedfield of vision permits the opponent without the ball to move topositions which force the defender to choose between seeing theball and seeing the opponent.

In the diagram the field of visionof the defender 4 is represented by the thick pie slice shapedarea. Notice that the opponent 4 has moved to a baseline positionin which the defender 4 can not see both the ball and theopponent 4. This forces the defender to back to a position underthe basket to be able to see both the opponent and the ball. Withthe defender under the basket the opponent 4 could quickly cut toreceive a pass near the foul line. If the defender chooses tomove over and make physical contact with the opponent or to lookat the opponent and lose sight of the ball, then the defender isless able to react to penetration by the ball holder. If thedefender chooses to view the ball and not view the opponent, thenthe opponent is able to move to a desirable shooting position toreceive a pass. Occasionally the defender chooses to move overand make body contact with the opponent while maintaining visualcontact with the ball. To counter this the offensive player mayback away to create space and thereby require the defender tochoose again between making contact, viewing the ball, andviewing the opponent.
