Continuity Waltzing

Why:

The following idea may assist a teamlearning to continue through a continuity offense rather thanhabitually shooting after one of the first few passes.

Who:

A five player offensive lineup and fivedefenders.

What:

One basketball, one device for playingrecorded music, once copy of Johann Strauss' The Blue Danube(better funded teams may prefer to use a live orchestra :) ).

How:

While the five defenders, and perhaps thebasketball, wait on the sidelines, have the offensive playerstake the court and run through their continuity offense. If thebasketball has been left on the sideline the players will have noalternative to continuing to move through their continuityoffense from one side of the court to the other and back, repeatedly. The coach may find it helpful to either raise thebasket or instruct the team to not shoot the basketball duringthe drill until instructed to do so.

If the timing of the cuts is hamperedwithout the basketball due to an inability to imagine a pass'duration, then use the basketball from early in the drill. In anyevent add the basketball at some point during the drill.

When the offensive players seem comfortableflowing back and forth from one side of the court to the other, and while they continue to flow back and forth from one side ofthe court to the other, turn on the Strauss waltz. After theplayers pause to wonder what is going on, and after the coachencourages them to continue moving through the offense, the musicwill, hopefully, help the players get the idea that thecontinuity offense can be continued indefinitely, within theoffense's own rhythm, without taking an unwise shot, until a wisescoring opportunity presents itself.

When the players seem comfortable with themusic, begin introducing defensive players. To enable theoffensive side's offensive rhythm to adjust to the disruption, begin by introducing a single defender. Then introduce defendersone at a time until as many defenders as the coach desires arepresent.

Ideally this drill will assist theoffensive team with running the team's continuity offense againstdefense for prolonged periods without attempting imprudent shots.
