Move and Shoot

Why:

This drill should improve: (1) shootingafter catching the ball while moving, (2) creating space betweenthe shooter and the defender, (3) conditioning.

Who:

Two players

What:

One basket, one basketball.

How:

For the explanation of this drill assumeone player's name is "X" and the other's is"Y".

X stands under the basket with thebasketball. Y positions himself or herself within Y's shootingrange and as far from X as possible.

X passes the ball to Y. As X releases theball X moves toward Y with the intention of harassing Y's shot.When Y receives the ball Y shoots the ball. (A variation can beplayed in which Y is permitted one bounce after catching theball.)

If Y's shot is successful, then X must runto retrieve the basketball while Y moves himself or herself tothe most advantageous shooting position relative to the positionsof X and the basket.

If Y's shot is unsuccessful, then Y mustrun to retrieve the basketball while X moves himself or herselfto the most advantageous shooting position relative to thepositions of Y and the basket.

When the appropriate player has reached thebasketball the player immediately passes the ball from his or herposition to the other player who attempts a shot while the passermoves toward the shooter attempting to harass the shot.

The game is continued either for a presettime period or until a designated number of baskets are made. Ifthe game is played well it should fatigue the players.
