11 Man Drill

Submitted by Coach Baron, Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School, Webster, Ma.

The drill needs a minimum of 11 people. Two defensive players are placed at both of ends of the court in the key. There are four outlets - 2 at each end of the floor. If there are more than 11 players, then the rest of them form lines behind the outlets. The drill begins with three players on offense bringing down the ball in a 3-on-2 situation trying to score. After the ball is shot whether it is made or missed the rebounder then outlets the ball to an outlet while the other side fills the lane again creating a 3-on-2 situation down the opposite end of the court. If the ball is not shot but stolen by the defense than the defensive player simply outlets the ball and the drill continues down the other end. The drill continues as long as you would like. When run properly your players might actually find this drill fun.

I agree with Stephanie that the 11 man drill is a terrific game type drill. We do it most practices with one twist. A score, assist, rebound, steal etc. earns a point. Turnovers, missed box out etc. lose a point. First 10 players to 5 points are out...everyone else runs. It really keeps up the intensity. The kids even dive for balls that are out of bounds. - Jeff Hoyle’s Dartmouth Girls Basketball Team Page

When we run this drill the two defenders are required to make transition from defense to offense upon acquiring possession of the ball from a steal, rebound, or the mesh. When the outlet pass is thrown both defenders fill the lanes. After playing offense one of the original defenders plays defense with the outlet player. The outlet players were positioned parallel with the tops of the keys. - Cory Lewis
