Basketball Shooting Drills: 1. The Start In and Expand basketball shooting drill 2. The Move and Shoot basketball shooting drill 3.The Hook Shot basketball shooting drill

1. Start In and Expand Basketball Shooting Drill

The Start In and Expand basketball shooting drill is fundamental for beginning a basketball shooting session well.

Why:

This drill should improve: (1) all fundamentals because the motion is rehearsed before power is required, (2) ability to get into a basketball shooting groove, (3) confidence at the start of a basketball shooting session.

Who:

One player

What:

One basket, one basketball.

How:

1. The basketball shooter begins a short distance (about three feet) from the basket and on a line between the basket and a spot on the court from which the basketball shooter commonly takes basketball shots during games. The basketball shooter begins basketball shooting repeatedly from the spot. Because the basketball shooter is so close to the basket the basketball shooter can concentrate on the fundamentals (eye focus on target, arc, footwork, balance, grip, release, body uncoil, etc.) rather than on generating the power required for long basketball shots.

2. Then the basketball shooter begins one stride away from the spot near the basket and strides into the spot and takes a basketball shot. The basketball shooter may either flip the ball to the spot to rehearse moving into a pass reception prior to the shot, or the basketball shooter may dribble the ball one bounce to the spot near the basket. The choice of stride or dribble should depend on whichever method the basketball shooter is likely to use for basketball shots during the game. The basketball shooter keeps doing this for between 25 to 50 shots or as long as necessary for the basketball shooter to feel sufficient success and develop a successful groove from the spot.

3. The basketball shooter moves the spot out a few feet farther from the basket and repeats 2. above from this slightly more distant spot.

4. After experiencing success the basketball shooter moves the spot out a few more feet and continues the process of experiencing success at each spot until the basketball shooter ends up basketball shooting from the spot on the court from which the basketball shooter is likely to basketball shoot during the game.

5. The basketball shooter repeats the process along each line connecting the basket to a spot on the floor from which the basketball shooter's team's offense causes the basketball shooter to take basketball shots during the game.

2. Move and Shoot Basketball Shooting Drill

Why:

This drill should improve: (1) basketball shooting after catching the ball while moving, (2) creating space between the basketball shooter and the defender, (3) conditioning.

Who:

Two players

What:

One basket, one basketball.

How:

For the explanation of this drill assume one player's name is "X" and the other's is "Y".

X stands under the basket with the basketball. Y positions himself or herself within Y's basketball shooting range and as far from X as possible.

X passes the ball to Y. As X releases the ball X moves toward Y with the intention of harassing Y's shot. When Y receives the ball Y shoots the ball. (A variation can be played in which Y is permitted one bounce after catching the ball.)

If Y's shot is successful, then X must run to retrieve the basketball while Y moves himself or herself to the most advantageous basketball shooting position relative to the positions of X and the basket.

If Y's shot is unsuccessful, then Y must run to retrieve the basketball while X moves himself or herself to the most advantageous basketball shooting position relative to the positions of Y and the basket.

When the appropriate player has reached the basketball the player immediately passes the ball from his or her position to the other player who attempts a basketball shot while the passer moves toward the basketball shooter attempting to harass thebasketball shooter.

The game is continued either for a preset time period or until a designated number of baskets are made. If the game is played well it should fatigue the players.
