Basketball's 2 on 1 to 3 on 3 Continuous Drill
Because many transition fast break opportunities conclude with a shot attempt in one on none, one on one, two on one or two on two situations before reaching a three on two or three on three situations, a drill is needed to practice these more frequent situations. The drill is similar to the three on two continuous except for the process of the entry of the last two defenders. The drill begins with one of players 1, 2, and 3 shooting at the nearest basket. One of them rebounds or retrieves the ball from the net while the others move to outlet positions. The player with the ball throws an outlet pass to one of the outlets who relays the ball to the other outlet cutting to the mid court position. The two players without the ball sprint to fill the lanes. As they are starting at different distances from the half court line they will cross it at different times. As the ball approaches the half court line player 4 sprints from the sideline to a defensive position near the foul line. As the second offensive player crosses the half court line player 5 sprints from the sideline into the center court circle and then to catch up with the play. As the third offensive player crosses the half court line player 6 sprints from the sideline into the center court circle and then to catch up with the play. The rest of this article is below the following diagram.

During the time between when the ball crosses the half court line and players 5 and then 6 catch up with the play players 1, 2, and 3 are attempting to score against players 4 in a one on one or two on one situation, then against players 4 and 5 in a three on two situation. The offensive advantage time frame is limited by the subsequent arrival of player 6. When the defenders obtain the ball from a rebound, steal, or from the net, the offensive players 1, 2, and 3 move to the sideline positions previously occupied by players 4, 5, and 6 and players 4, 5, and 6 make the transition to offense and attack the basket at the other end of the court by throw the same outlet passes as players 1, 2, and 3 had thrown. As the ball approaches the half court line players 7, 8 and 9 sprint from the sideline to defensive positions just as players 4, 5, and 6 had done previously. The play continues from end to end.
